murdered the school bus driver. police are frantically working to rescue a 5-year-old boy from his armed suspected captor, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes. >> negotiators continue to communicate with the suspect. and there is no reason to believe that the child has been harmed. >> reporter: police say the two are in a 6 x 8 bunker four feet under ground. the suspect may have food and supplies to remain underground for weeks. dykes has been speaking with police through a pvc pipe from the bunker to the surface. one neighbor says he has been at the bunker. >> he has steps made out of cinder blocks, going down to it. at the time he had doors made out of plywood. two sheet of plywood nailed together. i asked him, i said, you know what are you using it for? he said, my storm shelter. where i used to live at the storms used to come through a lot. >> reporter: police say the boy has mild autism and the suspect allowed the child to have his medication. >> he is crying for his parents and his grandparents and he does

not know what is going on. let this kid go. >> reporter: the shaken community is praying for the little boy's life. his pastor consoling many children that know him. >> i spoke to a young 13-year-old boy he was very much traumatized, his really good friend was taken. and was really wondering about his safety and protection. >> reporter: something everybody affected by the hostage situation are also wondering. the family's pastor says he has spoken with the boy's family and he says, quote, they're having a really tough time. of course they're having a tough time. i have a 6-year-old. i just can't imagine something like that. and this, this child has a lot of medical issues. adhd, asperger's. i can't imagine what the parents are going through. more importantly i am wondering what is in this man's mind? >> clearly, you have to imagine, some mental issues. authorities say he spent some time in the bunker for long

periods of time. this is nothing new for him. he took a hostage, a little boy. clearly a guy around the neighborhood known for strange, some times violent behavior. and a matter of time before it involved a human. beat a dog to death with a lead pipe. >> lead pipe. >> an escalating situation. and prayers for the little boy. if he makes it out, scarred from something like this. depressing on a lot of levels. a deadly ambush in kaufmann, texas, where a prosecutor was apparently targeted by a gunman outside a courthouse. the 57-year-old was shot and killed in the parking lot moments after he got out of his car. eyewitnesses say the gunman was wearing a mask. police are going through the prosecutor's cases for a connection. >> they deal with bad people, like any prosecutor. so there is no reason to believe that there wouldn't be somebody out there that might have an ax to grind. certainly this carries it to an

extreme. >> a long-time assistant district attorney known for his toughness. he handled drug and murder cases. friends say he was respected and very well liked inside of the courthouse. a disturbing federal court claims bomb sniffing dogs in airports may be a waste of money. a government investigation finds the tsa is spending millions of tax dollars on dogs that can't detect explosives. dog teams were secretly followed for a year and failed to find bombs in passenger terminals. the report says the dogs are simply not being trained properly. senate armed services committee could vote on the nomination of chuck hagel to be the next defense secretary. hagel faced off against some former republican senate colleagues yesterday in a bruising confirmation hearing. the sharpest exchange against senator john mccain who criticized hagel's opposition to the troop surge in iraq. and hagel apologized for using

the term the jewish lobby in the past. >> i have already said i regret referencing the jewish lobby. i should have said pro israel. i think it is the only time on the record that i have ever said that. >> eight republicans plan to vote against him. he has backing among many democrats. blinding snow blamed for a deadly pileup on a michigan highway. the mile long stretch of crashes involving 30 trucks and cars. three people were killed including two children believed to be siblings. and at least a dozen others were hospitalized. witnesses say they were driving on i-75 when conditions went from clear to whiteout in just a matter of seconds. a similar scene along a snowy highway west of minneapolis. three dozen big rigs, trucks, cars smashed into one another shutting down interstate 70. at least ten were hospitalized. the extreme conditions are

a group of women is suing an x-rated website that posted private intimate photos along with their names and addresses which is really terrible. one of a growing number of revenge porn sites. >> new term here -- revenge porn. add that to the vernacular of

the country. jilted exes or hackers often post the photos. but the women are taking aim at the website and its host and its fans. here is abc's juju chang. >> reporter: holly has no idea who did it but when she saw a dozen topless photos of herself on the website. >> knowing someone could with the click of a button take whatever information they want from you and share it is really troubli troubling. almost makes me want to shower with my clothes on. >> the fallout is terrible. women have lost their jobs as a result of this. most of them have become hermits. all of them feel humiliated. >> reporter: john morgan filed the lawsuit against godaddy.com which provides web space for 54 million sites including mainstream businesses. the class action lawsuit began with 17 women and they have been joined by dozens of others in less than two weeks. what makes the case unusual is that they're also going after the subscriber list. to tear the mask of anonymity from the people who prowl the sites.

why shame the subscribers and expose the guys looking at this? >> they're just as guilty. they should be held accountable because they're logging on, they're putting their credit card in, they're paying to see us exploited. >> reporter: eric goldman who teaches high tech law says their legal case is week. >> they can't win against the texans.com website against the website and subscribers due to a law that congress enacted said the only people who are liable for content online are those who post it >> reporter: these women are painfully aware they lost control of their own images and as well as their reputation. they feel their only recourse is to speak out even if the backlash at times is as harsh as the initial betrayal. i'm juju chang, beaumont, texas. >> went so far to call this as a form of cyberrape.

the dakotas to the northeast. here with more is abc's larry jacobs. >> reporter: a sudden snow squall blinded drivers on this detroit freeway causing a massive chain reaction. about 30 vehicles crashing into each other. police say two children, believed siblings and a motorist died in the pileup. >> people bleeding. people limping. people shaken up. >> reporter: to the north, cars stopping in whiteout conditions set off a chain reaction accident involving over 30 cars. >> as soon as i was able to get off the road and out of the way. it was just one after another. >> reporter: a similar crash, west of indianapolis leaving behind a twisted and tangled web of trucks and cars on interstate 70. at least a dozen people were injured. >> we are hopeful when we walk away from this at the end of the day that nobody will have died. >> reporter: a likely culprit, set of all the crashes is called lake-effect snow, cold air and wind passes over the warmer waters of the great lakes and notoriously changing visibility to next to nothing in seconds.

president obama said he will sign that bill into law. now to a consumer alert for parents about a big recall of children's cough and cold medicines. the makers of triaminic and theraflu warning, they're recalling 2 million packages of medicine. tamper resistant caps may be faulty posing risk of poisoning and the recall follows a dozen consumer complaints. history of priest abuse allegations made public following a court order against the l.a. catholic archdiocese. 30,000 pages of files surrendered. none of the names of the leaders will be blacked out in the documents. the archdiocese agreed to release paperwork which includes personnel files of 89 priests accused of sexually abusing children. the files include the names of anyone involved in possible cover-ups. >> they knew very well. now nobody can say we don't believe you. >> this proves, this really

happened. on this scale. it was that bad. and now -- these are their records. >> the church has three weeks to release the documents. the order is the final part of a $660 million settlement involving hundres of people who say they were abused by clergy members. >> it is remarkable. i love what he said "now you know it was on this scale." >> all laid out in black and white. >> absolutely. especially those involved in the cover-up. because that's what always has been infuriating for me at least, as a catholic, practicing catholic. terrible that children are being abused by people who they should be able to trust. but to know that people covered it up. and started sort of shuffling these priests to other parishes where they could, would, continue preying on children. it's just baffling. >> disturbing as the crime itself. like you said, shuffle them off

indiana, robbins was released from custody. update on the heartbreaking story we told you about yesterday. a vigil and march being held in chicago this afternoon for a teenage girl gunned down just days after taking part in the inauguration. the 15-year-old was caught in the crossfire between gang members making her one of 42 people killed in chicago just since the first of this year. in response to that, amazing gun violence, the mayor will move 200 police officers from desk jobs into the streets. >> we need to work together to protect our greatest resource. the children of the city of chicago. >> we need to get murderers off the street. if they do it once they will do it again. >> the 15-year-old girl made the anti-gang video, when she was in the 6th grade. and urged kids in the video to say no to gangs and yes to a great future. imagine just at the inauguration, time of her life, young girl representing the

of defense. the senate armed services committee could vote late next week. >> at his confirmation hearing yesterday, hagel got an earful on capitol hill. abc's jonathan carl reports. >> reporter: a vietnam veteran and former republican senator. chuck hagel found himself and his judgment under attack by a fellow republican and vietnam vet. >> were you correct or incorrect when you said that the surge would be the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country's -- were you correct or incorrect? >> well i am not going to give you a -- a yes or no answer. >> show that he refused to answer the question. >> reporter: hagel did answer, standing by his word on the iraq war and revealing something about the kind of defense secretary he hopes to be. >> i saw consequences, and suffering and horror of war. i did question a surge -- is this going to be worth the sacrifice?

we lost almost 1,200 dead americans during that surge. now was it required? was it necessary? >> reporter: hagel the first defense secretary who saw combat as an enlisted soldier. as a poor kid from nebraska he and his brother tom volunteered to serve in vietnam and served in the same unit in 1968. both getting wounded. each crediting the other for saving their lives. >> i don't see the lens of every world event, whether we should use american power through the lens of vietnam. but it is part of me. >> reporter: hagel's service was praised. >> i admire your service to your country. >> reporter: hagel is likely to be confirmed. even his supporters acknowledge he didn't have a particularly strong performance at his confirmation hearing. at one point telling the committee that he needs to learn

office officially today after sounding a warning about civil war in syria. at a sort of exit interview, clinton accused iran of playing an increasingly prominent role directing violence in syria and says that only raises chances of a wider conflict in the middle east. clinton criticized russia for blocking sanctions against syria at the u.n. clinton's successor, john kerry finished up his last day as a senator with a farewell tour of native massachusetts. he said america's strength overseas depend on working in a bipartisan way here at home. kerry is sworn in today as the nation's 68th secretary of state. no end in sight to the tense hostage standoff involving a gunman and 5-year-old boy in alabama. police say 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes is holding the boy in an underground bunker stocked with supplies. only means of communication through a narrow ventilation pipe. the boy is autistic. medication has though been

delivered through the pipe and police say dykes grabbed him after shooting the boy's school bus driver. a middle school student faces charges for a school yard shooting in atlanta. a 14-year-old was shot and wounded in the neck on thursday. the young gunman fired several rounds before an armed security guard was able to take away the weapon. police believe the two students had an altercation before the shooting. the victim was released from the hospital last night. the country is remembering a national tragedy this morning. ten years since the space shuttle "columbia" disaster. bells will toll at space centers across the country at 9:16 a.m. the moment "columbia" broke apart on re-entry killing all five crew members over eastern texas. during a teleconference with nasa, a group of high school science students in texas recalled what they saw and what they heard. >> i actually still remember the day. i was getting ready to go to a

game, and we were waiting and we about to leave until we heard this loud noise. >> there will be a wreath laying ceremony at kennedy space center where hundreds of people gathered in 2003 for the landing that never happened. an emergency landing for a passenger plane after the pilot passed out in the cockpit. the alaska airlines flight landed safely in portland after the first officer was forced to take over because the pilot was unconscious. the plane was on its way from los angeles to seattle when diverted. 116 people were onboard at the time. no word on what caused the pilot to pass out. medical researchers are telling doctors it is time to warn young patients about dangers found in energy drinks. pediatricians estimate 35% of american teens and adolescents drink the caffeinated beverages. the drinks are not fda regulated can cause palpitations, insomnia and anxiety and more dangerous for college students who mix alcohol with the energy drinks.

held captive underground is safe. it's friday, february 1st. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." >> one more. one more. this is it. swan song time. good friday morning, everybody. i am rob nelson. >> i'm sunny hostin. police in alabama just updated the hostage situation there and that is in our top story. and quite frankly i can't believe it has taken so long. you sort of see this in the movies, this negotiation. he has a little boy in there. >> they're getting medicine to the kid through the pipe, food down there, tv. this could drag on for weeks, potentially. and this kid has some pretty interesting medical conditions as well. scary on a lot of levels. >> also this morning, the well respected prosecutor gunned down outside the courthouse in texas. the all-out search for a masked gunman. and that is a prosecutor's worst nightmare. >> prosecutors do make some enemies.

an occupational hazard. >> yes. yes, we do. >> exactly. later this half hour, finding private pictures of yourself in x-rated poses online. the victim thousands of a growing industry called revenge porn. and how they are fighting back. >> you know, and i feel for these ladies no question about it. because if you take photographs or videos within the privacy of your own home with someone that you care about they shouldn't end up on a website. but, the real answer is you just shouldn't do it. it only worked out for kim kardashian. it really doesn't work out for anyone. let's face it. >> just thankful willis' pictures haven't been leaked -- thankful for that. an upcoming performance by the one and only jennifer hudson that could turn into a showstopper at the super bowl. who will be singing with her and why. that's coming up in "the skinny".

>> singing live. we'll discuss that. >> it will be a great moment. once you hear who the kids are. right there. it will make you appreciate that moment. because sunday is the super bowl and i wear a tie on the show, when an anchor is departing us. a black and gold fleur-de-lis tie. we do share a love of new orleans. this is your final day with us for a while. we have a permanent anchor coming in monday. this is your final day with us, at least for a while. so we'll have fun though. willis is upset. before all of that we get to the news this morning and some new developments in the hostage standoff involving a gunman and a 5-year-old boy. it is entering its fourth day. >> two remain in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama, with negotiators forced to talk through a ventilation pipe. our abc correspondent has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: rob, sunny, it is day four of the harrowing siege.

a 5-year-old is being held hostage by a man who police say murdered the school bus driver. police are frantically working to rescue a 5-year-old boy from his armed suspected captor, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes. >> negotiators continue to communicate with the suspect. and there is no reason to believe that the child has been harmed. >> reporter: police say the two are in a 6 x 8 bunker four feet under ground. the suspect may have food and supplies to remain underground for weeks. dykes has been speaking with police through a pvc pipe from the bunker to the surface. one neighbor says he has been at the bunker. >> he has steps made out of cinder blocks, going down to it. at the time he had doors made out of plywood. two sheets of plywood nailed together. i asked him, i said, you know what are you using it for? he said, my storm shelter. where i used to live at the storms used to come through a lot. >> reporter: police say the boy has mild autism and the suspect allowed the child to have his medication.

>> he is crying for his parents and his grandparents and he does not know what is going on. let this kid go. >> reporter: the shaken community is praying for the little boy's life. his pastor consoling many children that know him. >> i spoke to a young 13-year-old boy he was very much traumatized, his really good friend was taken. and was really wondering about his safety and protection. >> reporter: something everybody affected by the hostage situation are also wondering. the family's pastor says he has spoken with the boy's family and he says, quote, they're having a really tough time. abc news, new york. of course they're having a tough time. i have a 6-year-old. i just can't imagine something like that. and this, this child has a lot of medical issues. adhd, asperger's. i can't imagine what the parents are going through. more importantly i am wondering what is in this man's mind? >> clearly, you have to imagine, some mental issues. authorities say he spent some time in the bunker for long

periods of time. this is nothing new for him. what is knew that he took a hostage, a little boy. clearly a guy around the neighborhood known for strange, sometimes violent behavior. and a matter of time before it involved a human. beat a dog to death with a lead pipe. >> lead pipe. >> an escalating situation. and prayers for the little boy. if he makes it out, the scarring from an incident like this. depressing on a lot of levels. a deadly ambush in kaufmann, texas, where a prosecutor was apparently targeted by a gunman outside a courthouse. the 57-year-old was shot and killed in the parking lot moments after he got out of his car. eyewitnesses say the gunman was wearing a mask. police are going through the prosecutor's cases for a connection. >> they deal with bad people, like any prosecutor. so there is no reason to believe that there wouldn't be somebody out there that might have an ax to grind.

certainly this carries it to an extreme. >> a long-time assistant district attorney known for his toughness. he handled drug and murder cases. friends say he was respected and very well liked inside of the courthouse. a disturbing federal court claims bomb sniffing dogs in airports may be a waste of money. a government investigation finds the tsa is spending millions of tax dollars on dogs that can't detect explosives. dog teams were secretly followed for a year and failed to find bombs in passenger terminals. the report says the dogs are simply not being trained properly. senate armed services committee could vote on the nomination of chuck hagel to be the next defense secretary. hagel faced off against some former republican senate colleagues yesterday in a bruising confirmation hearing. the sharpest exchange against senator john mccain who criticized hagel's opposition to the 2007 troop surge in iraq.

and hagel apologized for using the term the jewish lobby in the past. >> i have already said i regret referencing the jewish lobby. i should have said pro israel. i think it is the only time on the record that i have ever said that. >> eight republicans plan to vote against him. he has backing among many democrats. blinding snow blamed for a deadly pileup on a michigan highway. the mile long stretch of crashes involving 30 trucks and cars. three people were killed including two children believed to be siblings. and at least a dozen others were hospitalized. witnesses say they were driving on i-75 when conditions went from clear to whiteout in just a matter of seconds. a similar scene along a snowy highway west of indianapolis. three dozen big rigs, trucks, cars smashed into one another shutting down interstate 70.

a group of women is suing an x-rated website that posted private intimate photos along with their names and addresses which is really terrible. one of a growing number of revenge porn sites. >> new term here -- revenge porn. add that to the vernacular of the country. jilted exes or hackers often post the photos. but the women are taking aim at the website and its host and its fans.

here is abc's juju chang. >> reporter: holly has no idea who did it but when she saw a dozen topless photos of herself on texxxan.com -- >> knowing someone could with the click of a button take whatever information they want from you and share it is really troubling. almost makes me want to shower with my clothes on. >> the fallout is terrible. women have lost their jobs as a result of this. most of them have become hermits. all of them feel humiliated. >> reporter: john morgan filed the lawsuit against texxxan.com and go-daddy.com, which provides web space for 54 million sites, including main stream businesses. the class action lawsuit began with 17 women and they have been joined by dozens of others in less than two weeks. what makes the case unusual is that they're also going after the subscriber list. to tear the mask of anonymity from the people who prowl the

sites. why shame the subscribers and expose the guys looking at this? >> they're just as guilty. they should be held accountable because they're logging on, they're putting their credit card in, they're paying to see us exploited. >> reporter: eric goldman who teaches high-tech law says their legal case is weak. >> they can't win against the texxxans.com website against the website and subscribers due to a law that congress enacted said the only people who are liable for content online are those who post it >> reporter: these women are painfully aware they lost control of their own images and as well as their reputation. they feel their only recourse is to speak out even if the backlash at times is as harsh as the initial betrayal. i'm juju chang, beaumont, texas. >> went so far to call this as a form of cyberrape. >> i am sure they feel violated. i have got to tell you --
